As FBI Serves Warrant to Burr Over Insider Trading Allegations, Will Gardner Return Money from “Morally Reprehensible” Colleague?

Denver, CO - Last night the FBI served a warrant to Senator Richard Burr related to his alleged insider trading amid the coronavirus pandemic, but Senator Cory Gardner has been mum on if he will return the $20,000 he’s accepted from Burr’s leadership PAC during his time in Washington. Gardner has also been silent if he will keep donations from other scandal-riddled Republican colleagues—unelected “political mega-donor” Senator Kelly Loeffler and Senator David Perdue—who each are under scrutiny for dumping stocks after a private Senate briefing on the pandemic.

These investigations come after Senators Burr, Loeffler, and Perdue began their “heavy trading” of shares, including in sectors affected by the pandemic, after attending a private Senate COVID-19 briefing, all while downplaying the threat of the pandemic. The New York Times penned a scathing editorial, calling the senators “morally reprehensible” for “prioritiz[ing] their stock portfolios, in a rank betrayal of the public trust” as they “misled an already anxious and confused public.”

Colorado Democratic Party Spokesperson Eli Rosen:

“While Senator Gardner’s Republican colleagues are under scrutiny for their unethical and potentially illegal trading, Gardner has been happy to keep their scandal-plagued checks to his reelection campaign. Senator Gardner must return the money and show Coloradans he does not condone his Republican allies  putting their wallets ahead of the American people.”
