Colorado GOP Elevates Amateur, Extreme Candidates for Governor
Denver, CO – Today the Colorado GOP gave Greg Lopez top line on their ballot, choosing an unsteady, unproven candidate with 34.34% of the vote, in a searing indictment of Heidi Ganahl’s flailing campaign. Ganahl trailed with 32.63% of the assembly vote; she also advanced to the primary ballot via petition last week. The assembly delegates’ choices show the far-right’s influence in the GOP and its candidates.
“Choosing Greg and Heidi as candidates to run our state shows that the Colorado GOP isn’t concerned with what’s right for Coloradans. These candidates lack experience, hold extreme views, and promote baseless conspiracy theories instead of offering real solutions for what Coloradans need: good jobs, lower costs, better education and clean air.” - Colorado Democratic Party spokesperson Kailee Stiles
Important details of the Republican candidates on the primary ballot:
Greg Lopez
Accused of violating conflict of interest rules for federal employees
Pushed homophobic rhetoric directed at the Governor’s family.
Is committed to ending mail-in voting and pardoning Tina Peters if she is convicted.
Admitted to a 1993 domestic violence charge
Heidi Ganahl
Was recently endorsed by far-right activist Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA.
Has supported insurrection architect John Eastman.
Would ban abortion and overturn the recently passed RHEA.
Will not denounce the Big Lie; called questions about her stance “divisive.”
Deleted hundreds of tweets before running for governor.
Coloradans still deserve answers to must-ask questions from these candidates. The first forum for these candidates post-State Assembly is slated for April 14 and we hope to start to get some answers:
Do they support the national Republican Party agenda to raise taxes on working-class Americans and seniors?
Should the insurrection on January 6th be considered as “legitimate political discourse”?
Will they accept the results of the 2022 election?
Does Heidi Ganahl agree with her opponent Greg Lopez on ending mail-in voting?
