Florida's Discriminatory "Don't Say Gay” Bill Fuels Hate from Colorado GOP Candidates

The wave of anti-gay rhetoric spreading across the nation has found footing in Colorado as GOP candidates continue to support hate in our state.

Denver, CO – This week, Colorado GOP gubernatorial candidate Danielle Neuschwanger said “all 50 states” should have a replica of the Florida “Don’t Say Gay” bill that prohibits gender-affirmation and discussions of sexual orientation in school. She has also wrongly called it an “anti-grooming” bill. Last December, she claimed that Gov. Polis is not gay during a campaign event, and has repeatedly doubled down on her statements.

Greg Lopez, also running in the GOP gubernatorial primary, has recently targeted Colorado’s First Gentleman, saying “I think it’s time we had a real First Lady, don’t you?” during a stump speech to a round of applause.

State representative Ron Hanks, running for the U.S. Senate, has continually voted against anti-discrimination measures at the legislature.

“We can’t stay silent while these candidates promote bigotry while running for our highest offices. This may be the face of the Republican party today: regressive, divisive, and hateful. But it is not who Colorado is and voters will make that clear this November.”– Kailee Stiles, Colorado Democratic Party spokesperson.
